At the first stop, the Mardi Gras were treated to fried
sweet potatoes. Visible at the right edge of that photo is a microphone from a Canadian
television crew doing a documentary. As the other photos on this page show, Mardi Gras in
Soileau is also about sharing friendship with a hug and greeting old acquaintances. The
Soileau Mardi Gras is also about preserving the tradition of the Creole Mardi Gras,
including the Mardi Gras chant and response, led by McKinley Ceasar Sr., shown with his
megaphone.
